Greetings from Joost Schokkenbroek - VMM's Executive Director
It is truly a pleasure and a privilege to introduce myself briefly to you – arguably the most important stakeholders for the VMM. In my former life I worked in Amsterdam as Chief Curator at Het Scheepvaartmuseum in combination with being Professor of Maritime History and Heritage at Vrije Universiteit. Having been appointed Executive Director at VMM several weeks ago I arrived in Vancouver to take over the helm from captain Ken Burton on July 20 – the very date the museum was established (in 1959).
My wife Josje and I visited Vancouver last year and immediately fell in love with the beauty of the city, its surroundings, and with the hospitable nature of the Vancouverites. So far I have experienced a strengthening of this love, and hope to gear my energy and ideas to good use for both the institution and the fine people working here.
I very much look forward to greeting you in a more personal manner. Meanwhile we will continue to work hard and explore old and new venues to let VMM remain a locally, provincially, nationally and internationally renowned museum to learn from and enjoy.
