Three theories about the name of this city:
a) Nome’s founder, was a Norwegian and there was a “Nome” valley close to his home town of Kvænangen.
b) A British cartographer had written “? Name” near the cape and it was transcribed incorrectly as Cape Nome,
c) The local Inupiaq name for this area was Naami.

Due to naming confusion with Cape Nome and the Nome River, local miners and merchants voted to change the name to Anvil City in 1899. However, the US postal service would not accept the change in names and it was changed back to the City of Nome.
